Marcionism

Marcion taught that the God of the Old Testament, a just but harsh creator, is a different being from the good Father revealed by Jesus. He rejected the Old Testament and cut the New Testament down to fit his theory.

Historical origins

Where It Began

Marcion, a wealthy shipowner from Sinope on the Black Sea, came to Rome around 140. About 144 the Christians at Rome separated from him. He organized rival churches with their own bishops, and they spread across the empire, surviving in places such as Syria into the fifth century.

Marcion assembled his own Bible: an edited Gospel of Luke and ten letters of Paul, with passages he judged too Jewish removed. A companion work, the Antitheses, set sayings of the Old Testament against sayings of the Gospel.

Why This Is Dangerous

It tears the Bible in two and denies that the God of Abraham is the Father of Jesus Christ. Without the Old Testament's law, sacrifices, and promises, no one can fully understand why Christ had to die.
