Jesus Calls Out His Church

The church began with Jesus Himself. He called His first disciples, appointed the twelve, taught them, gave them church discipline, and committed the ordinances to them. This called-out assembly of baptized believers was His church, and it was empowered by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

A Called-Out Assembly

The New Testament word for church means a called-out assembly. Jesus called fishermen from their nets to follow Him (Matthew 4:18–22), and He ordained twelve that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach (Mark 3:14).

“And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,”MARK 3:14 · KJV
