The Rise of the Catholic Church

The Roman Catholic Church was not the church Christ founded, needing only to be reformed. It grew out of errors: rule by a hierarchy of bishops, baptism as regeneration, the emperor's favor in 313, state religion in 380, and papal rule by Gregory's day. Christ's churches remained distinct from it.

Our conviction

Not the Church Christ Founded

The Roman Catholic Church teaches that it is the one church Christ founded on Peter, continuous from the apostles. Theologica teaches otherwise. Christ's church, the saved and baptized ecclesia gathered in local churches, has always existed, usually smaller than the institution and often persecuted by it (the perpetuity of the church).

“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”MATTHEW 16:18 · KJV

The Catholic Church was not founded on a single day. It took shape over centuries as churches gave up the New Testament pattern of church government, came under a hierarchy of bishops, and joined themselves to the Roman state.
