Dominican inquisitor at Toulouse · c. 1261–1331

Bernard Gui

Inquisitor at Toulouse from 1307 to 1323 and author of a widely used manual for inquisitors, which describes the beliefs of the Waldenses and other dissenters he pursued. His register of sentences shows most of those he condemned receiving penances or prison, and about forty handed over to be burned.

Early life

A Dominican of the Limousin

Bernard Gui was born around 1261 in the hamlet of Royères in the Limousin, in west-central France. As a youth he joined the Dominican friars at Limoges and made his profession in 1280. He spent the next decade in the order's schools of southern France, studying logic, philosophy, and theology, and then served as lector and as prior of the Dominican houses at Albi, Carcassonne, Castres, and Limoges.

Gui was a scholar by temperament. Over his life he wrote chronicles of the popes and the kings of France, histories of the Dominican order and its houses, catalogues of bishops, and lives of saints. Historians still use his works.
