Early life

A Priest from the Mountains

Jörg Cajacob, George of the house of Jacob, was born around 1491 at Bonaduz in the Graubünden, the mountain region of eastern Switzerland. He studied at the University of Leipzig and became a priest of the Roman church, serving for a time as a parish vicar in his home region. By the time he came to Zurich around 1524 he had left the priesthood and married. He came hoping to learn from Zwingli but was soon drawn to Zwingli's more radical students. He was called Blaurock, blue coat, after the coat he wore; tradition says the name was given him at a disputation when no one knew who he was.
