Wycliffite preacher and translator · c. 1354–c. 1414

John Purvey

A priest who served as Wycliffe's secretary at Lutterworth and afterward preached Lollard teaching. The more readable Later Version of the Wycliffite Bible has traditionally been credited to him, though many scholars now see it as the work of a team. He recanted under pressure at St Paul's Cross in 1401; little is certain about his later life.

With Wycliffe

Wycliffe's Secretary

John Purvey was born around 1354, probably in Buckinghamshire, and was ordained a priest in the diocese of Lincoln in the late 1370s. He became one of John Wycliffe's closest companions, living with him at Lutterworth in his last years and serving as his secretary. His enemies later called him Wycliffe's interpreter and glossator, the man who copied and explained his master's teaching.

After Wycliffe's death at the end of 1384, Purvey preached Lollard doctrine in the west of England, especially around Bristol. In 1387 the bishop of Worcester forbade him and four other Lollard preachers, among them Nicholas Hereford, to preach in his diocese.
