Galatians at a Glance
- Author. The apostle Paul (Galatians 1:1).
- Date. About AD 48–49, which would make it Paul's earliest letter. Some place it later, about AD 53–57, if the churches were in northern Galatia.
- Written To. the churches of Galatia (Galatians 1:2). We take these to be the churches Paul planted on his first journey in Antioch of Pisidia, Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe (Acts 13:14–52; Acts 14:1–23).
- Setting. After Paul left, teachers came who said that Gentile believers must be circumcised and keep the Law of Moses to be saved (Acts 15:1). They also attacked Paul's authority. He wrote to stop the churches from abandoning the Gospel.
- Key Verse. Galatians 2:16: a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ.
- Key Word or Theme. Freedom: justified by faith alone, and free to walk by the Spirit.
