Foundations of interpretation for every believer

Overview

A Field Guide for Every Believer

God calls every believer to diligently study His Word as a workman seeking His approval. We are not just reading Scripture for inspiration; we are studying it for transformation. We are not just studying it for information; we are examining it for application. Our study should lead to obedience that pleases God, not just knowledge that impresses others.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”2 TIMOTHY 2:15 · KJV

This is the first of ten studies in Advanced Hermeneutics: A Field Guide to Understanding God's Word. The aim is to move from surface-level reading to careful, Spirit-led, context-driven interpretation, so that we handle Scripture with clarity, reverence, and precision. Interpretation is a skill that grows with practice, like the senses of mature believers who by reason of use are exercised to discern both good and evil (Hebrews 5:14). The goal is not a lecture heard once, but a habit built for life.

Ten Weeks, One Skill

  1. Handle with Care. What hermeneutics is, exegesis versus eisegesis, and the danger of mishandling Scripture.
  2. Scripture with Scripture. The Bible interprets the Bible, and clear passages shed light on difficult ones.
  3. What Did the Author Mean? The original audience, grammar, history, and geography, and recognizing covenants and dispensations.
  4. It's All Scripture, But It's Different. Reading narrative, poetry, wisdom, prophecy, epistle, and apocalyptic as what they are.
  5. Is That a Metaphor or a Mountain? Figures of speech, symbols, types, and shadows.
  6. One Word Can Change Everything. Greek and Hebrew tools used wisely, and the dangers of “Strong's Concordance theology.”
  7. No Verse in a Vacuum. Sound doctrine, Scripture as one unified whole, and the danger of proof-texting.
  8. Hearers, Doers, and Contextual Misusers. Moving from right interpretation to right application.
  9. Twisting the Scriptures. Popular verses misused, and how false teachers manipulate context.
  10. Open Thou Mine Eyes. The Spirit's illumination, and study whose goal is Christlikeness.

If you have read Theological Method, you have already seen the shape of this method: literal, grammatical-historical reading, Scripture compared with Scripture, and the Word rightly divided. This series takes those same convictions into the workshop, one tool at a time, so that you can use them yourself with an open Bible.

Where this series begins

We don't interpret Scripture to fit our life. We align our lives with Scripture.

Theological Method

How we move from individual texts to whole-Bible conclusions: reading each passage literally in its grammatical and historical context, letting Scripture interpret Scripture, rightly dividing the Word, and staying humble before what God has revealed.
