The Sufficiency of Scripture

Why the Bible God has given is enough for salvation, for godly living, for counsel, and for the life of the church.

Overview

Is the Bible Enough?

Many Christians who believe the Bible is true still live as though it is not enough. They look for a fresh word from the Lord, a sign, a feeling, a technique, or a tradition to fill what they suppose the Bible leaves out. The sufficiency of Scripture answers that search. God has already given His people everything they need to know Him, to be saved, and to live a godly life.

Baptists have always been people of the Book. We hold the Bible to be the final authority in every matter of faith and practice, and we believe that God's revelation was completed when the Scriptures were finished. No new revelation is needed.

Sufficiency follows from what we have already seen. Because Scripture is breathed out by God (Inspiration) and is without error (Inerrancy and Infallibility), it carries His authority. Because it is sufficient, nothing needs to be added to it, and nothing may be set beside it.

The key question

When you need to hear from God, where do you go first? Sufficiency means you can open the Book with confidence that He has already spoken everything you need.
