What Is a Worldview?

Everyone interprets reality through a lens

Overview

The Lens You Look Through

You do not simply react to the world as it is. You interpret it. Every day you filter truth, morality, suffering, purpose, and authority through a mental and spiritual lens, whether you realize it or not. That lens is your worldview.

DefinitionWorldview

The basic set of beliefs through which a person explains reality and answers life's biggest questions about origin, meaning, morality, and destiny.

A worldview works like a pair of glasses. You rarely look at your glasses. You look through them, and they color everything you see. Two people can watch the same news report, attend the same funeral, or read the same verse, and come away with very different conclusions, because they are looking through different lenses.

The question is never whether you have a worldview. The question is whether your worldview is true. If your lens is not grounded in Scripture, it will be shaped by culture, emotion, or tradition, and those voices are never neutral. A biblical worldview anchors you in God's revealed truth, so that your choices, convictions, and direction flow from what God has said, not from what the world demands.

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he”PROVERBS 23:7 · KJV

Solomon's proverb describes a stingy host who says, Eat and drink, while his heart is not with you (Proverbs 23:6–7). His words are generous, but his heart is not, and his heart is the real man. That is the principle behind every worldview. What a person truly believes in his heart, not what he says, defines who he is and directs how he lives.
