One Spirit, One Body, Every Believer
Few questions have divided Bible-believing Christians in the last century as sharply as this one: when does a believer receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit? Pentecostal churches, and many charismatic churches, teach that it is a second experience, separate from salvation, to be sought after conversion and usually marked by speaking in tongues. Scripture teaches that every believer was baptized by the Spirit into the body of Christ at the moment he trusted Christ, once and for all, and that what he needs afterward is not a second baptism but a daily filling.
This is not an argument about labels. The answer shapes how a Christian understands his own salvation, what he seeks in prayer, and whether believers are quietly sorted into two classes: those who have received more of God, and those still waiting. This study states the Pentecostal teaching fairly and then lets the Bible answer.
The once-for-all work of God by which every believer, at the moment of saving faith, is placed by the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ, joined to Christ and to all His people, and indwelt and sealed by the Spirit.
The Spirit's continuing control of a believer who yields to Him and lets the Word of Christ dwell in him richly. It is commanded, it is repeated, and it shows itself in worship, thanksgiving, humility, and bold witness.
Three Convictions
- Spirit baptism happens once, at salvation, for every believer (1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 1:13–14; Romans 8:9).
- Being filled with the Spirit is ongoing, commanded of every believer, and distinct from that baptism (Ephesians 5:18).
- The evidence of the Spirit is His fruit, not tongues (Galatians 5:22–23).
If you have trusted Christ as your Saviour, is there a second baptism you still need to seek, or have you already received the Spirit through faith?
