Why Origins Matter
Where did the universe come from? How old is the earth? Did the human race begin with one man and one woman made by God, or with animals shaped by natural processes? These are not side questions. How a believer reads the opening chapters of Genesis shapes whose authority he trusts, how he explains evil and death, and how clearly he can preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Knowledge can feed pride. This study is not about winning arguments or sounding clever. The goal is to know what you believe and why, so that you can speak the truth in love with a settled heart and point people to Jesus rather than to yourself.
The view that God created the heavens, the earth, and all life in six literal, consecutive days only thousands of years ago, as Genesis 1 to 11 describes. It affirms a historical Adam and Eve and a global Flood, and it teaches that death entered the world through human sin rather than being part of God's original creation.
Young earth creationists usually place the age of the earth at roughly 6,000 to 10,000 years. The figure is not pulled from the air. It comes from the genealogies of Genesis 5:1–32 and Genesis 11:10–26, which give the age of each father when his son was born, joined to the Bible's own timeline from Abraham onward through the kings of Israel and Judah.
Here is a point that surprises many people. Neither evolution nor creation can be proved in a laboratory, because no one can rerun the beginning. Both are accounts of an unrepeatable past, and both are finally received by trust in a starting point. The naturalist trusts that matter, time, and chance explain everything. The Christian trusts the testimony of the God who was there. The real question is not faith against no faith. It is which faith rests on a trustworthy witness.
“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”HEBREWS 11:3 · KJV
Through faith we understand. We do not understand creation by measuring it, but by believing what God has said: the visible world was framed by the word of God.
When a scientific consensus and the plain words of Scripture disagree about the past, which one gets to correct the other?
