The Image of God

What it means to be made like God, what sin did to that image, and how Christ is making it new.

Overview

Who Are You?

Every worldview has to answer one question before it can answer any other: what is a human being? An animal that happened to evolve? A spirit trapped in a body? A consumer, a voter, a bundle of feelings? Scripture answers on its first page, and the answer changes everything.

God created man in his own image (Genesis 1:27). You are not God, and you are not an animal. You are a creature made to resemble your Creator, to know Him, and to represent Him on the earth. That is the source of your worth, the reason your choices matter, and the reason nothing but God can satisfy you.

This doctrine reaches into every corner of life. It is why murder is a crime against God (Genesis 9:6) and why cursing a person is wrong (James 3:9). It is why the unborn child and the aged grandparent have the same worth, why God made us male and female, and why no ethnic group may look down on another. And it is the doctrine the Gospel completes. Christ is the image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15), and God is making His people like Him (Romans 8:29).

The key question

If every person you meet bears the image of God, how should that change the way you treat the next one?
